Squash Club Update

It has been a while since I last updated everyone on events at the squash club. It has certainly been a busy period for me on a personal level as well as with all the activities going on at Inspire and the squash club.

I am sure that some of you have already noticed that a few people have given up playing squash at Inspire because of recent events with the loss of one of the squash courts. This is a real shame, I was really hoping that people would have a bit more patience and wait to see how things developed at Inspire. I personally feel that we can probably manage with two squash courts as long as we continue to work with Inspire to make sure that things run smoothly. After all, squash clubs like Midhurst and Storrington only have two squash courts and they seem to be able to make it work.

I sincerely hope that the rest of you keep playing squash at the leisure centre and continue to support the squash club, whether you are a member or not. As I said before giving up now would only justify their reasons that squash is not as popular as some of the other activities at the leisure centre. Therefore, putting the other two squash courts at risk of closure.

Squash Coaching

On a more positive note, the junior squash coaching at Inspire on Saturday mornings are going really well, with a few junior showing some really good potential of becoming very good squash players in the future. Inspire have committed to continuing with this, at least until the summer holidays.

Phil and I will also be restarting the adult squash coaching sessions at Inspire on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 8.20, starting on Wed 27th May. The dates are going to be Wed 27th May, 10th, 17th, 24th June, and 8th & 15th July. We will have a session week apart from when we have a club night, when we will attend for anyone that wants a bit of squash coaching advice.

Club Competitions 2015

And finally... Don't forget that the entry for this years club competitions ends on Sun 24th May, so if you have not put your name down to enter, and you would like to play in this years competitions please let Brian Holland or Alan Mann know, or better still go down to the club and put your name down on the entry list on the noticeboard.

Thank you once again to those of you that continue to support the squash club in these difficult times. I hope to see you on the squash courts and good luck in the club competitions.

Kind regards,

This years club competitions were split over two weekends, the main event, the Jackson Cup was contested on the first weekend between Steve May and "that man again" Matt Clarke, looking to retain the title for the fourth year in a row! Steve making it through to the final for the first time, played well leading up to the final, so the signs were there that this was going to be a "real humdinger" of a final.

The club competitions finals night did not disappoint, there was some exciting squash played. The main event, (Jackson Cup) was being contested between two players in good form, Matt Clarke who was looking to win the event for the third year running, and hard hitting Sam Milburn. Matt got of to a great start winning the first game 9/5, only to see Sam take the second game 9/5. It was still anyone's match to win, the third game saw both players playing some great squash. With Sam throwing everything at his opponent, including the kitchen sink, only to see Matt weather the storm and take the third game 9/5, reminiscent of "The Rumble in the Jungle" Ali vs Foreman in Zaire, oh dear, showing my age. The fourth, saw Matt take an early 5/0 lead, and although Sam fought hard to get back into the game, Matt was able to win the match 9/4.
